Tucked away in Walpole, New Hampshire, Distant Hill Gardens is one of those hidden gems that feels like stepping into a storybook. For Kaleigh’s senior session, we explored it all—sunlit clearings, lush greenery, and peaceful spots that offered the perfect mix of charm and natural beauty. The gardens provided not only variety, but a sense of calm that let Kaleigh truly shine in her portraits.
This was my first visit to Distant Hill Gardens and quickly learned that it has a way of revealing something new around every corner. Meandering woodland trails lined with ferns and towering trees create soft pockets of shade, while sunlit clearings open into wide meadows that feel like they stretch on forever. Vibrant flower gardens punctuate the landscape with bursts of color, and carefully placed stone walls, benches, and winding paths give every frame a sense of timeless New England charm. From the gentle slope of the hills to the hidden nooks tucked among the trees, the gardens provide an endless array of natural backdrops, each one unique and full of character.
What makes this location truly special is how it invites exploration. Every step brings a new angle, a new texture, or a new combination of light and shadow to work with. The open spaces and quiet corners feel peaceful, letting the senior move naturally through the environment and letting portraits feel relaxed and authentic. And while the focus is always on the senior, the space also makes it easy to include family in a meaningful way—whether it’s a quick snapshot along a garden path or a playful moment in the meadow. These small interactions often become some of the most cherished images of the day.
As the light changes, the gardens seem to transform too. Golden afternoon sun filters through the trees, casting delicate patterns on the ground and highlighting the soft movement of leaves and flowers.
